African Health Policy Network (AHPN): BLACK AND GLOBAL MAJORITY: INNOVATE AND SUSTAIN FUND
Overview
The Innovate and Sustain Fund is a targeted approach contributing much needed funding to Black and Global Majority organisations and projects who are working with, and for, their communities within health and wellbeing, and related fields. Successful organisations will also be challenging and disrupting structural and systemic racism and racist practices within the fields in which they work.
AHPN wants to work with organisations that are led by and for Black and Global Majority groups. You will have a track record of service provision, working innovatively, positively impacting the communities you serve and also challenging entrenched racism and racist thinking.
They want to help organisations build their support and provision for their communities and leave a sustainable legacy.
Eligible projects will need to have achievable outcomes delivered within a 16 month timeframe. In addition to the detailed working of your proposed project we will be looking for you to, depending on your organisational focus, cover one the themes below:

- Facilitate ongoing learning and development leading to organisational strengthening
- Introduce novel perspectives to current thinking and generate new data
- Policy
- Change and improve policies, regulations, practices and approaches
- Challenge the norms in relation to funding, funding criteria and funding/doner assumptions
- Ensure that resources are distributed equitably amongst communities according to need
- Communities
- Enhance the empowerment and greater self-assuredness amongst communities with lived experience
- Establish new links and form alliances between players at all levels
- Enhance the quality of interaction between all players and at all levels
What are they looking for
- They are particularly interested in projects or organisations that are challenging structural racism in a dynamic way that will lead to sustained change.
- They are interested in supporting those working with innovative ideas to make lasting change.
AHPNs Global Majority Innovate and Sustain Fund may be utilised for new projects or in some instances, if you believe that your project is already working in innovative and disruptive ways, for organisational core funding. You will be able to clearly show a track record here.
AHPN will also seek to work with you throughout the duration of the funded period [in a ‘light touch’ fashion and collaboratively along with all grantees] to develop joint change theories and discuss our impacts.
What they want to achieve
With this grant AHPN want to support Black and Global Majority led organisations who are working for the health and wellbeing of their communities in innovative and disruptive ways to challenge structural racism, disrupt systemic & discriminatory ways of operating, and build community resilience, health and wellbeing, promoting racial and social justice and leaving a legacy for others to build upon.
AHPNs mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of African descent communities in the UK who are disproportionately affected by long term health conditions. We adopt a human rights based approach to our work and proceed through the lens of:
- Inclusivity and involvement
- Education and empowerment
- Partnership and collaboration
- Community focus and a global perspective
With the Innovate and Sustain Grant Fund, AHPN want to see organisations and projects who are trusted by the communities they work with [whether they are working in the field of health equity, racial justice, migration/detention, the creative arts, education, LGBTQ+ rights, criminal justice, gender justice, science, tech or employment, addiction needs or mental health. We want to see project ideas put forward which benefit, in a holistic way, the wellbeing of the Black and Global Majority community and they are particularly interested in projects or organisations that simultaneously present a challenge to structural and systemic racism, practices and behaviours.
