Overview

Their responsibility is to support their people in their activities which engage with the local communities in which their business operates by helping the community and charity projects.

Their bakeries raise thousands of pounds for charity annually. Allied Bakeries Pennine raises funds for the Cure Parkinson's Trust by initiatives including support for the Stockport Carnival. Allied Bakeries Southern raised £20,000 for the British Heart Foundation through a bike ride from London to Brighton.

Allied Bakeries Southern donated more than 500 loaves to a primary school, which helped raise money towards renovating the school swimming pool. Allied Bakeries Eastern donated more than 2,600 loaves to 27 schools. A total of £1,360 was raised for various local charities and school projects.

We take a practical approach to showing that we care about what happens within our communities. Allied Bakeries Pennine has used one of our safety programmes, 'Stop Think Go', to demonstrate to schoolchildren how to play safely outdoors, especially in the summertime.

We sponsor local events. Allied Bakeries Midlands sponsors the local school awards category for 'inspirational teachers', within the Birmingham area.

In Northern Ireland, activity includes support for the SOS Bus, which goes out into the community to help people in their vulnerable moments.

Sunblest is partnering with the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children to raise funds through motivating and organising staff, hosting a corporate golf day, running two on-pack promotions and hosting a consumer challenge event.

Payroll giving is a valuable, long term source of revenue, providing regular income to help charities budget and plan ahead more effectively. We operate a payroll giving scheme which enables employees to donate to charity via the payroll. It's an easy, tax-free way for us to help our favourite charity or good cause.

Allied Bakeries serves the whole of the United Kingdom and has approximately a third share of the bread market.

The company also provides a wide range of morning goods, rolls and part-baked bread for bake-off in retailers' stores.

Allied Bakeries manufacture the leading brands Kingsmill, Allinson, Sunblest and Burgen. The local operation in Belfast seeks primarily to promote the Sunblest brand name through its charitable support.

The company do not have set guidelines for charitable support and state they are very responsive to interesting ideas. They select a main charity for the year (NI Chest Heart and Stroke 2002/2003) but are also open to proposals from employees of Allied Bakeries for suppporting causes and charities dear to them. They adopt a flexible approach to their charitable activities and will consider applications from a broad range of areas.

Other charities they have supported include, Northern Ireland Hospice and Cancer Charities. They have also ran a "Play it Safe" Initiative in schools. Product in-kind may also be available in some circumstances.

It is likely that the main charity for the year will operate Northern Ireland wide while proposals from employees could operate on a local level.

How to Apply

Apply in writing to the contact. Applications are considered in and around April, May or June of each year. You should submit a proposal before this for consideration as once a charity has been selected another main charity will not be considered until the next year.
