Overview

Under Priority 1.1 of the Peace III Programme, Building Positive relations at a local level, councils will work within self-defined clusters on the development of peace and reconciliation action plans which focus on tackling sectarianism and racism in their area.

The Cluster envisages that the Carrickfergus, Antrim and Newtownabbey Cluster area will be characterised by positive relations that enable all of the communities residing in the area to address challenges and develop a confident and peaceful future, unhindered by sectarianism or racism. The operational period will last up until December 2010.

The cluster aspire to:

  1. Improve confidence and empower communities to deal with the challenges of tackling racism and sectarianism.
  2. Build trust and tolerance by increasing engagement within and between communities.

Objective 1.1 : To support the development of civic and community leadership within the cluster area.

  • Peace III Partnership Development Programme (£15,000)
  • Dialogue & Civic Leadership Programme (£40,000)
  • Business Diversity Programme (£16,000)
  • Faith Communities Programme (£35,000)

Objective 1.2 : To support the development of civic and community leadership within the cluster area

  • Bespoke Community Capacity Programme (£50,000)

Objective 1.3 : To support communities to reduce the visible manifestations of sectarianism and racism and provide/increase areas/venues regarded as shared space in the cluster area.

  • Positive Image Programme (£23,500)
  • Area Development Programme (£313,692.39)

Objective 2.1 : To promote respect, understanding and opportunities for integration between communities of different religious belief, political opinion, ethnic and social background.

  • Positive Futures Programme(£200,000)

  • Play Fair Programme (£250,000)
  • Addressing Perceptions (£250,000)

Objective 2.2 : To increase the integration of marginalised persons and communities into community and civic life.

In delivering the Peace III Strategy and Action Plan three specific approaches have been selected:

  • Defined Calls through Procurement
  • Defined Strategic Actions
  • Small Grants Programmes

Small Grants

The CAN PEACE III Partnership under Priority 1.1 - Building Positive Relations at a Local Level invites applications under its Small Grants Programme

This will support projects within the £5,000 - £30,000 range and which can be delivered between June 2009 and December 2010.

Projects which are in a position to commence in June 2009 are particularly welcomed as are projects which include a cross-border dimension.

There will be £400,000 available for small grants

  • Stage 1 - Faith Communities - £7,000
  • Peace III Partnership Development - £15,000
  • Shared Space - Expressions of Interest

The Phase 2 of the Peace II Programme will latrgely be tender led but there are small project awards of up to £2,000 available.

Small project awards of up to £2000 are now available from the CAN Peace III Partnership through The Bridging our Community Gap Programme which aims to actively support new communities and those affected by community tension to participate in appropriate peace building activities.

The small grants are available for groups within the CAN area to use in developing an activity or process which will help to improve dialogue and relationships in local areas and with other communities. This may include activities such as creative arts, training, facilitation, drama, sports, residential weekends or camps and internet or media technology.
