Goldsmiths Company Charity
Overview
Charity Committee Update:
"Following a review of our priorities and due to the impact on our income as a result of COVID-19 pandemic and the turbulent financial market, we have taken the decision to fund in our large grants category (specifically charities within the prisoner resettlement space) by invitation only. We are also no longer running a small grants programme until further notice. Any changes or updates to our funding position will be announced clearly on our webpages."
Charity & Education Grants
There are three grantmaking committees within the Goldsmiths’ Company Charity. These are the Charity Committee, the Education Committee and the Wardens’ Committee. In addition, on behalf of the Charity the Goldsmiths’ Centre makes grants to Trade-related projects and collaborations.
The Charity Committee makes two sizes of grants. Large (up to £30,000) and Small (up to £5,000). Following a strategic review in 2016 the main focus areas are Prisoner Resettlement, Youth and an Ageing Population. The Small Grants are awarded to charities working along similar themes but with a slightly broader remit. For guidelines and details of how to apply see here.
The Education Committee is proactive in its grantmaking and unsolicited applications are not currently accepted. Grants are directed towards primary and secondary education, the improvement of STEAM subjects, community engagement and the wellbeing of teachers.
The Wardens’ Grants are directed towards discrete projects predominantly focused on support for: the advancement of the trade of goldsmithing and silversmithing; existing military associations; wider causes in the City of London; and strategic partnerships with cultural institutions. Unsolicited applications will not be accepted.

From January 2022 statement
The Goldsmiths’ Company and the Goldsmiths’ Company Charity have a five-point plan and commitment to addressing equity, diversity and inclusion across all of their entities and in their workplace, their membership, the charities they work with, and their trade. They will partner with charities that hold similar values and are being proactive where there is a need for improvement.
All their grants are unrestricted, which means that – in exceptional circumstances – you have the flexibility to change the use of their grant without prior consent from the Charity Commission. However, if any of the changes you wish to make are very significant please try to let them know via your reporting or email grants@thegoldsmiths.co.uk.
The 1327 Fund is a charitable giving initiative for their members – launched to offer more choice and greater flexibility for the giving of every Goldsmith.
Support to charitable and educational partners can be given for those activities that fall within their priority areas of youth, criminal justice, and an ageing population. With your help, their ambition is to fund additional projects and programmes that are beyond the current support of the Company’s Charity.
Goldsmiths' Global Majority Fund
The Goldsmiths’ Company Charity and the Goldsmiths’ Centre are offering grants to existing projects or new ideas that facilitate an increase in the representation of people from the Global Majority in the jewellery, silversmithing and allied industries. They are working in partnership with the Jewellery Futures Fund on this initiative.
What are they looking for?
They are looking for individuals representing themselves or established groups, who identify as being from the Global Majority community and who want to see change in the industry, to join their new Goldsmiths’ Global Majority Fund pilot cohort.
You will share decisions on how to allocate the fund, worth £50,000, to the projects represented on the panel.
If you would like to participate, you will need to meet the following criteria:
- are resident in the UK
- identify as being from the Global Majority
- are over 18
- have a desire / enthusiasm to effect change in the Jewellery/goldsmithing trade
- have had some exposure to or interest in either grantmaking or grantseeking (desirable)
Submit an Expression of Interest form by 8 October 2021 which sets out who you are, why you are interested and what your proposed project/idea is. This will include details on how you would use the funding. Please email this to globalmajorityfund@thegoldsmiths.co.uk, including your name or your organisations' name in the subject heading.
