Leverhulme Artists In Residence Grant

Overview

These awards support the residency of an individual artist in a UK university or museum in order to foster a creative collaboration between the artist and the staff and/or students of that institution. The term ‘artist’ encompasses visual artists, creative writers, musicians, poets and other producers of original creative work.

The scheme brings an artist into a research and study environment where their artistic form or creative art is not part of the normal curriculum or activities of the host department. There must be a distinct contrast between the artist and host department’s expertise (for example, a poet being hosted by a physics department, a composer by a geography department). It is not the objective of the residency to provide additional teaching capacity for the host department.

The residency must be an entirely new collaboration between the artist and the host institution.

There should be clearly defined benefits for both the artist and the host department, and the period of the residency should involve sustained interaction between the applicant and the artist in the host department.

Value

The maximum value of an award is £15,000. The grants provide a stipend of up to £12,500 for the artist and consumable costs, such as artist’s materials, of up to £2500.

Duration

A typical residency would be for ten months based on the artist being present at the host institution for two days per week. Residencies of a shorter duration, with the artist present for a higher number of days per week, are also possible.

Eligibility

An artist may not apply directly to the Trust. The applicant must be employed by the host institution and should be the person who will act as the host for the artist and co-ordinate the residency and all related activities.

The artist should not have studied or worked at the host institution for the last five years nor be a registered student at any institution when the grant commences.
