Overview

Urgent Action Fund accepts applications in any language using online, text and mobile funding applications 365 days of the year. They respond to applications within 24 hours of submission. Decisions are usually made within 1-10 business days. (Translation needs may increase the time to decide.) Once a grant is approved, funds can be wired within 24 hours to 10 business days, dependent on need.

The maximum grant request can be up to $8,000 USD.

Urgent Action Fund makes grants in two categories. To receive a Rapid Response Grant, your proposal must fall under at least one of these situations:

1. Security Grants – The safety and security of women or trans human rights defenders/activists/organizations are threatened as a result of their human rights work.

2. Opportunity Grants – An unexpected moment or opportunity for advocacy or mobilization that may result in advancements for women and LGBTQI’s rights, such as changes in legal decisions, policy, and laws, or a shift in public attitudes and practices.

Criteria

Grant proposals must fit four Criteria:

1. Women/Trans/Non-Binary Led – women/trans or non-binary people must be the primary decision-makers.

2. Focus on Women, Trans, And Non-Binary Rights – actions proposed must benefit women, trans, and non-binary people

3. Unanticipated and Urgent – the specific situation must be unanticipated and time urgent. Actions must be implemented within 3-6 months of approval of the application.

4. Networked – the group must have support from local or international feminist activists or networks.

Geographic Focus

Urgent Action Fund for Women’s Human Rights provide funding to frontline feminist movements supporting women, trans, and non-binary activists in Canada, Central Asia, Europe, the Middle East, the Balkans, the Caucasus, and the United States. Their Sister Funds in Africa, Asia & Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean are able to support work in other parts of the world.

Funding Priorities

  • UAF prioritizes funding for organizations that have an operating budget size of less than $1 Million.
  • Marginalized communities
  • Groups with limited access to resources and donor support
