Passive income and Micro donations

01 May 2024
Back to resources
If you're looking to raise income for your organisation with little effort and make the most of very small donations, we've rounded up some of the options available to you.

Many charities offer their supporters chances to contribute to their annual fundraising revenue through ‘passive income’ - fundraising with little effort on the organisations part. And for some smaller organisations this can amount to a lot when micro donations, made via a website or app, mean very small, but regular donations are made.

Whether buying food, electricals, or booking a hotel room, your shopping supporters can help raise your income through purchases.  See how Help for Heroes promotes this form of giving to their supporters. Registration is usually free, but charges may apply (see individual schemes for details).

Online shopping

Easyfundraising

Through the easyfundraising platform, shoppers can raise a donation for their nominated good cause every time they shop online with one of the 8,000 participating retailers at no extra cost to the consumer. With more than 2 million people using the platform, it is one of the UK’s leading ways to support grassroots charities and causes and the platform has raised more than £50 million for charities and good causes since its launch in 2005.

£5,000 pledge from Tesco & easyfundraising

Tesco and easyfundraising have come together again to offer a further funding boost to voluntary groups, charities, and CICs in the shape of the “Community Pledge”.

Following on from the first Community Pledge in 2023, easyfundraising, the UK’s biggest charity shopping site, and leading supermarket Tesco, will donate five more £1,000 funding pots to good causes across the UK in May.

To qualify for a potential £1,000 funding boost, community causes can participate by registering for free on the easyfundraising platform. Once registered, every time a supporter shops at Tesco, the cause will automatically earn an entry into the draw.

Additionally, Tesco will donate £10 for each new shopper that shops with them in May via the easyfundraising platform. Register your organisation to enter the Community Pledge draw.

easyfundraising are hosting a short webinar about the Community Pledge if you are interested in finding out more – register for it here.

Other shopping options

Give as you Live is a free fundraising platform, which has raised over £24 million for UK charities, big, small, and micro. Online shoppers register for free to earn cash-back style donations from over 6,000 leading stores when using their App, Donation Reminder, and website. You can encourage your supporters to sign up and choose your charity once you’ve registered.

TopCashback allows their users to donate their cashback earnings to their chosen UK-based charity. Both users and charities can request for an organisation’s inclusion on their charity list. Find out more here.

TheGivingMachine is a charity that provides a range of fundraising options for UK-based good causes no matter how big or small. Products include a Shop&give and GivingVouchers among others.

Travel

Charitable Travel, set up in 2020, Charitable Travel is a social enterprise supporting UK-based charities by allowing customers to donate 5% of the cost of a holiday to a charity or social enterprise of their choice when they book through Charitable Travel. There’s no extra cost to customers. Charities must be registered on the JustGiving donation platform. Find out how to become a charitable partner here.

CharitableBookings is a travel and lifestyle platform with a social purpose. It’s free for members to join and they earn cashback on their travel bookings, whilst the charity of their choice receives 30% of the commission from the booking. This equates to around £5 per £250 booking transaction. It’s free for charities to sign up and the charitable donation is at no cost to members.

Micro Donations

Pennies - till point micro-donation platform that gives customers the opportunity to make a small, one-touch donation instore or online.  Retailers must have the potential to raise at least £10k pa, but there are no set-up or ongoing costs.  Can be used in charity shops.

Ripples round up a supporter’s card payments and donate the pennies to their chosen not-for-profit. Integrating with the donor’s online banking or credit card provider, roundups are calculated from every card transaction from 10p to £1. When the round-up accumulates to £5, that donation is sent to the cause of their choice. Find out more here.

Vouchers

Tesco Clubcard Vouchers - Tesco are still one of the few retailers that allow their loyalty card members to donate their earned rewards to charity. Donate Clubcard vouchers to charity | Clubcard | Tesco

Savoo is a retail website that offers voucher codes and deals to thousands of UK retailers. Every time a supporter uses a code or deal, Savoo donates up to 50% of their affiliate commission from the retailer to their chosen charity. It’s free for charities to sign up and free for supporters too. Charity registrations is here.

Charity Vouchers let people buy, and then give, charitable donations as gifts. The recipients of the gift voucher then donate their voucher’s value to any UK Registered Charity of their choice. And the charities they choose get 100% of the value of the vouchers they have been given. There is no need for charities to sign-up in advance or to become a formal member of the Charity Vouchers scheme.
