North West Migrants Forum: The Advancing Race Equality Awards
Overview
This awards scheme showcases the very best of anti- racism work. First held in 2021 with 32 winners named across 12 categories, the awards are organised by the North West Migrants Forum and recognise the community spirit which is thriving across the country along with all the hard work which goes in locally to tackle racial inequalities and to make such a difference to people’s lives.
This year’s Race Equality Awards focuses on 7 categories, recognising individuals, teams, groups, organisations or networks that have been leading action, removing barriers and enhancing the inclusion of and engagement with ethnic minority people across Northern Ireland – from the workplace to the delivery of services.
Nomination Assessment Process
A shortlist for each category will be drawn up by NWMF based on the number of nominations. Discretion will be exercised in cases of exceptional nominations. The top five in each category will automatically be shortlisted.
A distinguished panel of independent judges with proven commitment to advancing race equality will assess the shortlisted nominations and determine the winners.
Each judging panel will award each nominee a certain amount of merits for the following:
- Quantity of nominations for that particular award category.
- Quality of nominations received for that particular award category.
- How strongly your work relates to the award category you have been nominated for.
- Impact – the extent to which the nominee made a difference.
- Innovation – to what degree was the nominee’s work original and ground-breaking?
- Role model – how the nominees work had an effect on others, degree of leadership shown.
- Evidence provided by the nominee themselves.
Award Categories
Young Leader
This category recognises young people ages 18-30 who work with their communities to challenge racial discrimination to achieve an inclusive and shared future for example through work building intercultural trust , future-oriented peace work at grassroots level and supporting the rights of marginalized people.
Community Champion of the Year
This category recognises community champions who have gone above and beyond in the course of their work, service, and passions to challenge racial discrimination in workplaces
and in society.
Advancing Racial Justice & Fairness Award
This award recognises an organisation, business, or public sector organisation for their work in tackling racism, reducing barriers for racialised people experiencing marginalization and promoting peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland.
Anti-racism Media Award
This category recognises the work of individual communicators or media outlets in highlighting racism and providing platforms for racialized people to drive change.
Anti-racism Leader of the Year
This category honours exceptional individuals who have gone above and beyond in the course of their work to challenge systemic racism and actively take steps to address racial inequalities in Northern Ireland and demonstrated exceptional courage and leadership in advancing racial justice, human rights, and equality in Northern Ireland.
Lifetime Achievement Award
This category recognises individuals who have a minimum of two decades of extraordinary long-term involvement and service to the field of racial justice and human rights. The recipient will have a recognized level of significant engagement in racial justice work and have demonstrated exemplary leadership in advocating for human rights and equality in Northern Ireland.
